CBD Treatments for Pets

by Jacobus on May 21, 2020 17 comments

CBD oil is one of the most popular CBD products on the market that is being sold for human and pet consumption. However, a CBD oil or tincture isn’t the only way your pets can benefit from CBD. Over the years, numerous CBD companies have specialized in creating CBD pet products that make it easier for your pet to ingest CBD.

For pets that have a hard time with the flavor or taste of a terpene-rich CBD oil, numerous CBD treats (CBD-infused edible) and CBD capsules have been developed to make CBD supplementation easier on pets and their owners.

In this article, I will be highlighting four ways in which you as a pet owner can supplement CBD to help provide a healthy and well-balanced lifestyle for your pet.

The Low Down on CBD Supplements

Most CBD supplements are made from hemp- a species of the cannabis plant that contains very low concentrations of THC and very high concentrations of CBD. For pet owners who are new to CBD, it is important to understand whether or not the CBD product you are purchasing produces any side effects, and if it is safe for pet consumption.

CBD is a non-psychoactive and non-toxic substance that is incapable of allowing any consumer to overdose.

CBD has, in fact, been praised as being a more tolerated medicine than typical medications you would get from the vet or a pet center.

Before purchasing CBD products for your pet, it is important to consider four things:

  • The Type of CBD Product
  • The CBD Brand (where your product is sourced from)
  • The Size of your Pet
  • The Ailment or Condition of your Pet

It is important to be educated in the type of CBD products you pet needs, as well as knowing where the product is being sourced from. Without this, it is really just a shot in the dark. Including the size of your pet and its current ailment or condition is also very important to factor in as some conditions might require a stronger dose to see benefits.

For example, if we were to compare a 16 lbs shiz tzu to an 88 lbs german sheppard. Which pet do you think would need a higher dose of CBD concentrations? Obviously the much bigger german sheppard would require a higher dose in comparison to the much smaller shiz tzu based on its overall body mass.

Other things like an ailment and the type of CBD product will factor in too but you get the idea.

Having an answer to all four of these things before buying any CBD products online will allow you to locate the most optimal CBD product for your pet. While CBD has proven to be a “miracle medicine” it is important to know that not all CBD products will be as effective for each pet so keep this in mind while you shop.

Now that you have a basic understanding of what to think about and look for when you are shopping for your CBD pet products. Let’s talk about the type of CBD products for your pets.

CBD Pet Oils

CBD pet tinctures or oil drops will come in a small glass bottle filled with highly concentrated CBD. The dropper that comes with it makes it easier to administer the oil. CBD Oil can be dropped in food, water, or directly into your pet’s mouth. A full-spectrum CBD oil is preferred as the entourage effect will enhance the therapeutic effects of the CBD your pet will consume.

When administered under the tongue, CBD oil provides the fastest relief from symptoms. However, CBD oil is often the hardest to administer and has the strongest taste.

Carrier Oils

It is important to check the label of your bottle to locate the type of carrier oils that are present. MCT coconut oil and hemp seed oil are the two most commonly used. These plant-based carrier oils are important because they help “carry” the plant compounds into your system. Due to the chemical makeup of some tinctures, they are absorbed better with the help of carrier oil which leads to an increase in overall health benefits.

The most effective carrier oils are the ones that contain the highest percentage of saturated fat. The hemp seed oil contains approximately 11% saturated fat, in contrast, to MCT coconut oil which rounds off at about 90%. This will lead to better bioavailability (absorption).

Organic Coconut Oil

Hemp seed oil is still a great option as it contains a high concentration of omega 3’s and 6’s which promote healthy skin and a healthy coat for your pet. Make sure you are looking for organic, non-GMO, grain-free CBD oil when you do your shopping.

CBD Pet Capsules

CBD pet capsules are useful as they can be hidden in snacks or spilled open and mixed into a pet’s water bowl or favorite meal. Similar to CBD oil, you are going to want to look for capsules that are organic, grain-free, non-GMO, and vegan as most capsules sold in stores contain animal gelatin as an ingredient.

A healthy option for your pets is going to be the vegetarian or vegan-based capsules.

This method is much slower than CBD oil as it typically takes 45 minutes to take effect as the capsule has to travel through the digestive tract before entering the bloodstream.

CBD Pet Treats

CBD treats are a great way for pets who are picky eaters or are sensitive to strong tastes to receive the benefits of CBD. These pet treats are already infused with CBD oil so there is no need for mixing.

CBD treats are infused edibles which means that it will take longer for your pet to feel the effects due to the product having to travel through the digestive tract before entering the bloodstream. Similar to capsules, this process will take about 45 minutes before effects are felt. Also, note that the concentrations of CBD are lower in CBD dog treats/capsules than it is in CBD oils and tinctures.

CBD Pet Topicals

CBD topicals are great for pets with:

  • Serious Joint
  • Body Pains
  • Skin Allergies/Irritations
  • Inflammation
  • Dry Skin
  •  Insect Bites

Applying a topical cream directly to your pet’s skin can result in immediate temporary relief. However, topicals are only for external use so make sure your pet doesn’t ingest it.

Choosing the Right Product

It is imperative that before you buy a CBD product online that you look for the source of where this CBD is coming from. All hemp is not grown equally, as some hemp farmers grow their product to different calibers and standards.

In order to cut costs and increase production, many suppliers of CBD grow their hemp farms using artificial fertilizers, pesticides, and chemicals that are very toxic for pets.

Genetically modified or GMO seeds are used by some farms in order to grow pest-resistant hemp crops. Purchasing 100% organic CBD products will prevent your pet from ingesting these harmful toxins.

Serving as a reminder, the most important part of the purchasing process when selecting a CBD product is locating the source of where your product comes from and identifying whether the product is:

  • 100% Organic
  • All Natural
  • Non-GMO
  • Contains No Artificial Additives
  • Grain, Dairy and Gluten Free (depending on the consumer’s preference)
  • Vegan (depending on consumers preference)

Following this simple checklist above will help ensure that you are purchasing a quality product for your pet. If you have further questions about a product it never hurts to reach out to the company’s customer service team who will be happy to help answer any questions you have.

I’m always on the lookout for quality CBD products and as such I am thrilled to have come across your post here on CBD treatments for pets. CBD oil these days is all the rage and for good reason as it is one of the best organic remedies out there. To see that there are products out there for dogs is outstanding. In particular I am interested in the CBD pet capsules and CBD pet treats. This is really valuable information for pet owners and I know some people who will find it as valuable I have, so I’ll pass it along. Great work!

Hello Jacobus – This is an enjoyable read as it is very informative regarding CBD oil.  It has been a bit of a mystery to me and this clarifies a lot. I was never sure how Hemp fit into the equation. It is also good to know that it is safe for pets as well as humans.

On the selling and distribution end, with CBD not legal everywhere, how do you control who orders it online?  What happens if someone orders from a location where it isn’t legal?

    Jacobus - May 22, 2020 reply

Hey Nathaniel, thank you for your input, and thank you for asking such a great question. While there is no doubt that shipping CBD is a bit of a grey area due to the legality of this substance. There are ways to safely and legally ship this product without getting into trouble with the law.

Here are some tidbits for you to read

The CBD you ship must have THC levels below 0.3%, and you must be able to verify in writing the CBD and THC levels of the products you are shipping.

The CBD you sell should come from (extracted from) hemp plants, not marijuana and the THC level must still be below 0.3%.

A CBD product must come from a licensed grower which means that you can’t just ship a random experimental batch of cannabis plants that you grew in your backyard.Being a licensed grower means a state government official has oversight over the production of the hemp crop

Your CBD-containing products must be third-party tested to show the chemical makeup of the products you’re selling which includes the THC content.

I knew about CBD products but didn’t know that they use it to make pet products also. It seems that nowadays they use CBD oil for everything. I think the same principles that apply to people should apply to our pets. All these products may be good but we always need to make careful research and always consult a vet before we decide to try some of these. Just to be on the safe side…

    Jacobus - May 21, 2020 reply

Couldn’t agree more Stratos. If any pet owners are unsure about giving any CBD products to their pets it is recommended that they contact their vet to clear up any uncertainty.
